A Message from the Leadership

NSBE Members and Friends,

This time last year, the National Society of Black Engineers’ annual report stated confidently that NSBE was “Engineered to Withstand” the mounting challenges facing our organization and Black communities broadly, particularly in the United States. So-called “anti-woke” initiatives in state legislatures across the country, and the recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court effectively ending affirmative action in higher education, were salient among the issues threatening the progress of NSBE’s work.

We also reported on the unprecedented decision made by our leadership, only weeks earlier, to opt for a more inclusive sociopolitical environment and a larger, more accommodating venue for our 50th Annual Convention (#NSBE50), by relocating the milestone event from Orlando, Florida, to Atlanta, Georgia, very late in the planning process.

The end of the reporting period, July 31, 2023, left our readers somewhat in suspense about the prospects for the continued success of NSBE’s mission in the near future. But today, we proudly report that the bold claims made at fiscal year-end 2023 were realized. The progress of our Society in Fiscal Year 2024 leaves no room for doubt about the resilience and strength of our people and our mission.

Our membership numbers made another big leap upward, by 27% this year, to 22,520, exceeding 20,000 for the first time since the COVID pandemic pushed down participation in nonprofit membership organizations almost universally around the globe.

#NSBE50 in Atlanta was a huge success, content-wise and by the numbers, as many of the Convention’s all-time record 16,600-plus attendees conveyed their appreciation to the Convention Planning Committee and other NSBE leaders for the roster of activities around the theme “Engineering CommUNITY.” Among the many highlights was an inspiring, wide-ranging conversation between NSBE pre-collegiate and collegiate members and NASA Astronaut and former NSBE collegiate member Victor Glover, who was also honored with a NSBE Lifetime Membership and presented with an NSBE patch for his space suit during the Convention.

NSBE’s Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (NSBE SEEK) returned for its 18th year of motivating educationally underserved children to pursue careers in STEM, in the program’s second year of presenting in-person, hands-on engineering design and STEM learning camps post-pandemic. Read further in this report to see uplifting data about NSBE SEEK’s success in moving students toward the goal this year.

A small decline in the number of Black bachelor’s degree recipients in engineering in the U.S. in 2023 — reflecting the challenges faced by students during the pandemic — was a setback for our movement toward NSBE’s 10k Goal, which is to lead U.S. colleges and universities to produce 10,000 new Black engineers annually by 2025. But even here, good news shined through: the percentage of Black graduates remained steady.

June 20, 2024, found NSBE and our mission on the world stage, as our leaders rang the closing bell for the Nasdaq stock exchange and shared countless photos of our members, to send the message to a global audience that NSBE is Black excellence in STEM.

And the fiscal year ended on a note of joy and anticipation, with the official kickoff of NSBE Gold, our 50th anniversary celebration, and a look ahead to the 2025 Annual Convention, in Chicago, the hometown of our Society’s founders.

NSBE members, NSBE supporters, FY24 proved the power of our CommUNITY. Let’s continue to use our power to move the world forward by providing STEM knowledge and proficiency to all.

Thank you for your dedication to NSBE’s vital work.

Sincerely,

50th Annual Convention

Exceeding the attendance goal by more than 1,600 participants was only one of the many success stories written at NSBE’s 50th Annual Convention (#NSBE50). Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens — an engineer and a former member of NSBE — joined other leaders at the press conference for the landmark event, which brought 16,683 attendees — an all-time record for NSBE — to the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, March 20–24, 2024.
The Convention theme — “Engineering CommUNITY” — spoke to the vision of NSBE’s six founders and the diverse supporters who helped them actualize that vision in 1975. As sentiment against diversity, equity and inclusion surged in Florida and other states in fall 2023, NSBE’s leadership unified to announce the relocation of the event to Atlanta from its original venue in Orlando. The decision was perilous in terms of logistics and planning, but it resulted in a quality experience that reflected our organization’s commitment to our mission.

Membership

NSBE’s impressive membership resurgence post-pandemic continued this year, with an increase of more than 4,700 in the number of students and professionals committed to fulfilling our mission.

The 26.6% uptick was reflected in every membership category and followed an earlier 26% increase during Fiscal Year 2023.

Our NSBE Professionals expanded by more than a third this year, and our collegiate membership demographic experienced a bump-up of more than 31%, contributing to a membership total that exceeded 20,000 for the first time since the rise of COVID-19.

A strategy of increased engagement with our members earned the membership growth in 2023–24: from pre-collegiate programs providing early STEM exposure; to academic and leadership skills development; to career development activities; to events and communications designed to enhance fellowship within the Society.

In The Media

Advancement of our mission accelerated as media outlets turned to NSBE throughout the year, for news about life-changing and community-empowering programs such as our Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK); to report on our leadership role in the Black community’s response to the U.S. movement against diversity, equity and inclusion; and for reports that amplified our yearlong 50th anniversary celebration for a global audience, as NSBE leaders rang the closing bell at the Nasdaq Stock Market.

DeSantis’ ‘Anti-Woke’ Bills Are Costing Florida Millions of Dollars in Business

"It was a difficult decision for the National Society of Black Engineers to move its 2024 event from Florida, said Janeen Uzzell, CEO of the National Society of Black Engineers, which two years ago selected Orlando to serve as the host city for its 50th annual convention.

But after conversations with the NAACP, the National Urban League, legal team, sponsors, members of Congress as well as other organizations in the same boat, the NSBE decided it was best to not have the event there, she said, adding that ‘significant sums’ of money are potentially being left on the table."

National Society of Black Engineers Rings the Closing Bell

“When we empower NSBE, we empower ourselves. When we invest in NSBE, we invest in our collective future. And when we celebrate NSBE, we celebrate the very best of what the world can be.”

— Angela Stewart, Nasdaq Vice President of Corporate Systems

NSBE’s SEEK Program Gives Kids Nation-wide a Look into Engineering

"This past Monday the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) launched its annual Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) program for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who share an interest in learning about engineering.

The program is formed to provide Black students and other minorities in STEM the opportunity to learn the basics of engineering, understand complex puzzles and provide each student a chance to be a part of NSBE."

Programs and Initiatives

Foundational work and innovation to increase our effectiveness characterized NSBE’s programs and initiatives in the current reporting period.

MOU Revamp

Since our launch nearly 50 years ago, effective partnerships to advance our mission have been essential to the National Society of Black Engineers. This year saw the value we place on those mission-driven collaborations increase even further, in the face of rising social-political challenges to our work.

To meet those challenges, NSBE’s Programs Team took on the task of sharpening one of our organization’s key tools for partnership management: our Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), written agreements that outline shared goals, responsibilities and expectations of partners, without the complexities of legal contracts or financial commitments. Our implementation of a streamlined, application-based MOU process this year now ensures that each of our MOU partnership agreements aligns with NSBE’s values, goals and mission.

Integrated Assistance

Honeywell, a Fortune 500 company with businesses in automation, aviation and energy transition, is among the longest-serving partners supporting our collegiate members and U.S. engineering education institutions through the NSBE Integrated Pipeline Programs (IPPs). NSBE developed the IPP concept in 2016, to enable collaboration with our corporate partners in customized, holistic programs to significantly increase the number of Black students prepared to fill technical positions in the workplace. NSBE IPPs increase awareness of and access to STEM careers through internships, scholarships, mentoring and professional development seminars; provide grants to universities to scale-up successful academic support programs; engage with and support pre-collegiate students to encourage their interest in engineering careers; and support programming for technical professionals within NSBE.

Honeywell awarded 19 scholarships totaling $95,000 to NSBE collegiate members this reporting year, directly supporting the students’ academic and professional journeys. In addition to receiving financial assistance, the Honeywell-NSBE IPP scholars engaged in career readiness programs designed to enhance their professional development and mental health.

Summer Support

NSBE established our Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (NSBE SEEK) program in 2007 to introduce science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to rising 4th, 5th and 6th grade students from communities whose members are underrepresented in the STEM fields. Since then, tens of thousands of students have benefited from the hands-on, team-based engineering design projects of the cost-free program, which aims to inspire the students to pursue engineering and technology careers. NSBE SEEK provides three weeks of mentorship/instruction by NSBE collegiate members and others, encourages creativity and fosters a love for learning in a supportive environment.

The 2024 NSBE SEEK program took place in four physical locations — Houston, Chicago and two sites in Washington, DC — and one virtual camp.
Site # of Students
Chicago, IL – Earle STEM Elementary 18
Houston, TX – Baker Ripley House 106
Washington, DC – C.W. Harris Elementary (all-girls) 27
Washington, DC – Payne Elementary 109
Virtual 411
Total 671
STEM Awareness – 98% of students increased their understanding that there are multiple types of engineers.

Confidence and Interest in STEM – 80% of students developed greater confidence in their ability to do well in science. 82% of students developed greater confidence in their ability to do well in math.
“I’m a systems engineer, and until I went to college, I did not fully understand what engineers did…. The culture and first-class instruction my son received had me in tears every single Friday during their presentations. I wished I had this experience growing up. We drove an hour each way every week for this experience and are so grateful for this exposure to his love of engineering and peers that look like him.”
“My children love building things and seeing how they work. Having multiple children made it difficult to commit financially to a program for all at the same time. (I’m) very grateful SEEK is able to provide this learning at no cost. (It is) very empowering for the parent and child to see representation of themselves amongst peers and instructors. My children left the program every day excited to use their imagination to code.”

Scholarship Awards

The financial burden of higher education weighs more heavily on African American students, as a whole. To address this challenge, the NSBE National Scholarship Program provides crucial financial support, ranging from $500 to $17,000 per year, to students pursuing engineering or applied science degrees. This year, NSBE’s National Scholarship Program awarded more than $1.3 million in scholarship awards to pre-collegiate, undergraduate and graduate students. Meaningful scholarships increase the likelihood that students complete their engineering degrees. They also help fulfill NSBE’s mission — “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers…”— and they empower students to fulfill their dreams of obtaining higher education in STEM.

Partnerships and Fundraising

Partners Who Move Us Forward

The Power of a NSBE Pivot: When NSBE was faced with the prospect of doors closed to our programming in Florida, we responded with decisive action, aligning with our partners and our leadership to execute a bold change of direction. In Atlanta, we reaffirmed our mission, stood firm with our members and demonstrated our power. Our 2024 Annual Convention wasn’t just a relocation. It was a powerful statement of resilience and commitment. Under the theme “Engineering CommUNITY,” we brought together more than 16,600 attendees, the largest convening in NSBE’s history, fostering career advancement, innovation and industry leadership.

A Record-Breaking Year of Impact

FY2024 was a phenomenal year, with the Annual Convention being the largest career engagement and partnership success in NSBE’s history. Thousands of our members connected with more than 400 top employers and higher education recruiters at the Annual Convention Career Fair, forging new opportunities and career pathways. This year also marked the expansion of our corporate network with the addition of new affiliates from various industries, including telecommunications, semiconductor and construction. The new presence signals a growing recognition of NSBE’s impact, and we look forward to nurturing and strengthening these relationships as we continue building pathways for Black Engineers to thrive.

Strength in Partnership

The overall success we saw during this fiscal year and the success of the 2024 Annual Convention were both made possible through the unwavering commitment of our partners, who stood alongside us to create a transformative experience for our members.

Amazon

Amazon played a vital role in leading the Black STEM Experience (BSX), hosting the Engineering CommUNITY initiative, which provided hands-on engagement, professional development and networking opportunities that strengthened the career pipeline for Black engineering talent.

Bechtel

Bechtel exemplified exceptional leadership in strategic partnership by hosting our Winter Conference and inviting members of the NSBE Board of Corporate Affiliates (BCA) to their headquarters for an innovative strategy session. This collaboration deepened industry ties and reinforced Bechtel’s investment in the future of NSBE.

Merck

Merck expanded its commitment to NSBE by hosting an exclusive on-site leadership meeting, where our CEO connected with Merck’s CIO and CTO. This high-impact gathering sparked meaningful conversations about corporate engagement, opening doors for long-term partnerships that will shape opportunities for NSBE members for years to come.

UL Enterprises

UL Enterprises, although new to NSBE partnership, made an immediate and significant impact, quickly aligning with our mission and displaying genuine dedication to our members. Their decisive action in funding various Annual Convention initiatives demonstrated their status as an authentic partner.

To Our Partners:

We are deeply grateful. Your support, leadership and dedication to the advancement and success of NSBE have been invaluable. Your belief in our vision and your investment in our members continue to propel NSBE forward. As we look to the future, we recognize that partnership is more than sponsorship. It is a shared commitment to ensuring that Black Engineers excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the world. Together, we are engineering a future where equity, innovation and opportunity are at the forefront.
